I appreciate a new start, a do-over, starting over, or whatever term you choose as we enter the New Year. Every year I create a list. Not resolutions but more like aspirations. And every year I have “rollovers”. There’s that one thing I put off for an entire year and have to bring it back to the forefront. But there’s also the rollover that has become a staple to the list every year—my health. I don’t ever expect it to be checked off. Like the majority of the nation, I start the new year focusing on my health. But unlike that majority, I maintain this focus throughout the year. I want to be a better version of myself every year that goes by, to become better with age.
Retiring from competition many years ago, I had to find a different source of motivation. It took me by surprise that I found this in my day-to-day routine and environment. I see my neighbor, who’s 80+ years old, go on a rigorous walk every morning, rain or shine, armed with hand weights and I think, “I want to be that active and fit when I reach that age.” She just didn’t wake up and decide to do this; the years of persistence and dedication gradually happened over time. It starts now! I get the same bolt of motivation when I’m dragging on an ugly day (inside or out) and I see every shape and size running on my way to school drop-off. No matter their pace or intensity, the simple fact that they’re out there beating the pavement getting it done truly inspires me.
That’s what I expect to accomplish here –to inspire, motivate, and provide focus throughout the year. I want to be a resource for you that’s relatable. Like many, I have vices and obstacles. I have a sweet tooth, I enjoy a glass (or two) of champagne, and I have real life responsibilities that take the focus off of myself. In spite of it all, I work hard to stay fit and healthy. I do this naturally: no caffeine, no diet pills, and no fat burners. Just sweat and making the right choices in food and nutrition.
I invite you to join me on my journey as we work to inspire one another. Feel free to use this space as a place to ask questions, provide comments, and share respectfully. I look forward to getting to know you!
